Glossary - Cisco 3810 DSL Config Help for USWest Based MegaCentral ISPs

ATM Asynchronous Transfer Mode - Layer 2/3 routable network protocol. Used by phone companies to form underlying high speed backbone networks.
bridging Taking traffic from one network and putting it on another, usually by means of rebroadcasting packets, but with DSL bridging refers to rfc1483 ATM encapsulation.
BVI Bridged Virtual Interface - Cisco terminology for a virtual subinterface that is associated with a bridge group in Integrated Routing and Bridging (IRB)
Cisco Cisco Systems Inc. - Manufacture of Routing Equipment
class "C" An IP network with a 24 bit mask (/24). A block of 255 IP addresses, carved out along standard class boundaries.
DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol - a TCP/IP protocol that is used to assign IP addresses automatically to network connected computers.
DSL Digital Subscriber Line - Physical Layer Network Protocol utilized for high speed internet connections over copper phone lines (local loop).
FR Frame Relay - a type of of Layer 2 network protocol.
IOS Internetwork Operating System - the software that runs on Cisco routers
IP Internet Protocol - used most often as a replacement term for TCP/IP

modem The funny looking little box that lets your data network or computer speak these silly protocols over the phone lines.
PPP Point to Point Protocol - a TCP/IP protocol usually used over point to point serial links.
PVC Permanent Virtual Circuit - same as VC only used more frequently when referring to Frame Relay type networking.
rfc1483 Internet Draft Document that describes Ethernet over ATM encapsulation.
TAC Technical Assistance Center - Cisco's tech support center.
VC Virtual Circuit
VCD Virtual Connection Descriptor - an ATM term describing the virtual circuit created with the local atm VCI/VPI pair.
VCI/VPI Virtual Connection Identifier/Virtual Path Identifier - used to designate a particular VC on an ATM circuit. Similar to DLCI in Frame Relay networking.
/24 abbreviation representing an IP network with a 24 bit mask. (Class "C", 254 addresses)
/28 abbreviation representing an IP network with a 28 bit mask (subnetted class "C", 14 addresses)
/29 abbreviation representing an IP network with a 29 bit mask. (subnetted Class "C", 6 addresses)
/30 abbreviation representing an IP network with a 30 bit mask. (subnetted Class "C", two addresses)

This page is maintained by Jay Stewart bhagwan@themoon.org , the configurations listed have been amalgamated from working and suggested Cisco 3810 DSL setups from Cisco TAC, other ISPs, would be Cisco Jocks and others. The author of the homepage will take no responsibility for screwing up your router if you use any of these configs. Use at your own risk!!! Your mileage may vary. . . .
